Criminal Minds: Smart Move, CBS

Criminds150 When CBS announced it's post-Super Bowl plans a few months back, I was pretty floored that they chose the drama Criminal Minds over such staples as Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, CSI, CSI Miami, etc. I knew of the Mandy Patinkin drama, and although I had never seen it, I couldn't help but wonder what the heck CBS was doing! Look at how ABC worked in Grey's Anatomy last season -- it was a brilliant move.

I wondered if the second-year show could live up to the hype that CBS was promising, including the usual "best episode yet" taglines, so after the post-game coverage, I stuck around to see what it was all about. After all, as a devoted "LOST" fanatic, I had the opportunity to see what it was about this series that was giving LOST such a run for its money.

After just one ep of Criminal Minds, I totally understand why people are crazy about this show.

I don't know if CBS and Criminal were just putting their best foot forward with the episode, "The Big Game," the first of a two-part special, but they definitely got it right. Part two is Wednesday night @ 9 p.m., and thanks to LOST's permanent move to 10 p.m., CBS has hooked in a new viewer.

I can't speak enough about the chemistry of this show. I feel it works better than most of the crime dramas and, because of CBS's reputation to march out drama after drama, Criminal may be one of those shows that was just seen as another in a long line of hour-long programs. The roles of Patinkin (The Princess Bride, Chicago Hope, Alien Nation), Thomas Gibson (Dharma & Greg, Chicago Hope, Far & Away), Shemar Moore (Young & The Restless, The Brothers, Diary of a Mad Black Woman), Matthew Gray Gubler (The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, RV) and co. work really well together and makes for what seems like a very entertaining series.

The only downfall of CBS is in this day an age, when many shows' full epsiodes are posted on the network Web sites, sadly Criminal is not one of them. I'd love to be able to catch up on this series online but I guess I'll have to wait for DVD. In the meantime, I'll be checking out Season one on Netflix.

If you haven't seen this show, I highly recommend it to the crime drama viewers of the world. It's well worth the weekly hour of your time.

I have to admit I was a little hard on this show. I've seen a few episodes now that were pretty entertaining. But really, if you like Criminal Minds, do yourself a favor and track down the British series Wire in the Blood, which is very similar in subject matter.

Glad you liked it. I have enjoyed it since the first show. The first season is out now, on DVD, at Amazon.

Criminal Minds is an intelligent show, with good dialogue and it is well thought out. That's why I like it. And the actors show their versatility. Thomas Gibson and Mandy Patinkin have a history as outstanding actors, on Broadway, in film and on television.
