Since I've been rocking a little DVR action, I've noticed a very bad habit creeping into my TV viewing routine.  We're stuck in the middle of a virtually TV-less summer, but there are actually a few shows worth watching that have been slowly working their way to the front.  I'm worried if my bad habit progesses, I'll be in for some serious trouble come fall.  Let me explain.

It used to be, if I wanted to watch a TV show I just up and watched it.  If I missed it, I'd download it and watch it some point the next day.  Well, with the DVR, I find myself sitting at the end of a busy evening thinking "shit, I missed X show. Ah, no big deal, I'll just watch it now, after all I can skip the commercials."  This turns into me watching recorded TV until way past the point of a prudent bedtime.  The worst example was after Tuesday night's Eureka premiere - I hate to admit it, but I started watching that sucker after midnight.  I got to bed shortly before two.

It's so nice to have the DVR and to be able to get instant gratification after I miss a show, but I really have to get out of the pattern of watching it really late the night it ran.  It does help with the water cooler talk (after all, I wouldn't have been able to discuss last night's It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia unless I'd watched it at 12:30 last night), but it doesn't help my waking up in the morning.  I guess this is why the universe has caffeine.
